Cher's Marriage to Gregg Allman
As best I can decipher, the following outlines the brief, tumultuous union of Cher
and Gregg Allman.
In 1974, just four days after her divorce from Sonny Bono
became final, Cher and
Gregory Allman were married in a shotgun ceremony, with only Cher's sister
Georganne present. Cher has said "I knew it was a mistake, I cried all the way
home".
Initially, the marriage lasted just 9 days, at which point Cher filed for divorce.
However, the couple briefly reconciled, until Gregg filed for divorce. Cher then
learned she was pregnant with son Elijah Blue and the
couple again reconciled. The union lasted until sometime before Elijah was six months
old, at which point Cher again filed for divorce. They were divorced in December 1976
or January 1977.
Cher has said that the marriage did not last because of Gregg's heroin addiction.
Cher has said that Gregg is not a good father to Elijah, and has made no effort to
contact his son since he was very young. "Chastity has a good father, Elijah does
not, I do not, that's life."
